Nigeria’ s former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has urged the nation’ s political leaders and citizens to remain steadfast in upholding democratic governance, emphasizing that no viable alternative exists to civilian rule.
Speaking at the unveiling of a new book, 100 Years of Political Parties Evolution in Nigeria, 1923– 2023, published by the Inter- Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Abuja, Abubakar stressed the importance of nurturing democracy as an enduring system of government.
The event, themed 100 Years of Political Parties Evolution in Nigeria– The Imperative of Nigeria’ s Political Stability: Issues and Solutions, brought together political figures, lawmakers, and democracy advocates to reflect on the nation’ s democratic journey
Abubakar, who chaired the occasion, reaffirmed that despite past military interventions, democratic governance in Nigeria is now firmly established. He expressed pride in the role his administration played in the country’ s transition from military to civilian rule, having overseen the handover of power to an elected government on May 29, 1999.
Reflecting on that era, he noted that when leaders are genuinely committed to democracy and work towards strengthening political institutions, the dividends of democracy become evident in national development
