According to a report from the Punch, on Monday September 8, 2025, after six months away from legislative duties, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central is set to rejoin her colleagues in the National Assembly before the end of September.
Her legal representative, Barrister Victor Giwa, disclosed that the senator, currently spending time abroad, has wrapped up all logistics necessary for her official return once the Senate resumes plenary on September 23. Giwa noted that the expiration of the sanction leaves no further barrier to her reinstatement.
“Her suspension period is over and there’s nothing standing in the way of her resumption,” he explained, stressing that the leadership of the Senate is not expected to resist her comeback.
The lawmaker was suspended in early March following disagreements over the relocation of her seat during plenary sessions, the matter escalated to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, which recommended disciplinary measures that not only barred her from sittings but also denied her access to aides, allowances, and other official entitlements.
From the onset, Akpoti-Uduaghan maintained that the decision was politically charged, Natasha linked her suspension to her earlier petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, where she accused him of misconduct an allegation the chamber dismissed outright.
While she obtained a favorable court ruling challenging her suspension, the Senate leadership insisted the penalty would run its full six months, in July, her initial attempt to return was thwarted when security officers blocked her entry into the complex, sparking a brief confrontation.
With the sanction now expired, her legal counsel argues that any pending lawsuits surrounding the case will have little practical value, in his words, “the judicial proceedings no longer determine her mandate since the disciplinary term has naturally elapsed.”
Political analysts say her reinstatement could reignite discussions on internal discipline in the Senate, the treatment of dissenting voices, and the broader tension between institutional authority and political rivalry, for her supporters, however, Natasha’s return signals a moral victory after what they describe as an orchestrated attempt to silence her.
