In a recent video on YouTube from 1 hour 33 minutes 43 seconds, Pastor Enoch Adeboye shared a personal reflection on identity, legacy, and divine promotion. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) recounted how his given name, Adejare, has often been overshadowed by the widespread recognition of his title, “Pastor,” and his surname, Adeboye, which originally belonged to his father.
He acknowledged the transformation brought about by God’s grace, noting how the name Adeboye—once associated with his earthly father—has now become a household name across the globe. This shift, he emphasized, is not a product of personal effort but of divine favor. He illustrated this by sharing an anecdote about his son, whose identity was recognized not through family ties, but through the spiritual legacy now associated with the name.
Pastor Adeboye encouraged his listeners to believe that greatness can begin with them, regardless of their family background or current circumstances. He emphasized the generational flow of blessings, asserting that once God elevates an individual, the impact extends naturally to their descendants.
According to him, “My real name is Adejare. Adeboye—it’s my father’s name. By the special grace of God, one way or the other, it has pleased the Almighty God to bless Adeboye… that’s my father. But today, now, everywhere I go, I’m “Pastor.” Many people don’t even know my surname. And the other day, somebody saw my son somewhere and said, “Oh, you are—” He didn’t even say, “Oh, you are the son of…” Who did they call him?”
“So, even if there is no greatness in your generation, it will begin in your life. You better say “Amen” loud and clear. You see, because the moment God makes you great, your children will automatically become great. It flows. But now we want to talk briefly about this boy that the Bible says was “exceedingly great,” so that we can learn from him. So even though our parents were great, we can become exceedingly great.”
