Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has come under fresh criticism over his role in the internal crisis that plagued the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State during his tenure.

Senator Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker, alleged that El-Rufai was intolerant of opposition within the party and even went as far as demolishing the house of a party official sent to mediate in the sate’s political disputes.

Sani made these remarks during an interview on Channels TV while reacting to El-Rufai’s recent defection from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The former senator dismissed El-Rufai’s complaints about the APC’s lack of internal democracy, stating that the former governor himself had operated a highly centralized and autocratic political structure in Kaduna State.

Sani further revealed that on three occasions, the national leadership of the APC intervened to address the crisis in Kaduna State but met resistance from El-Rufai. The first reconciliation effort was led by former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, while another was handled by Segun Oni. However, El-Rufai reportedly ignored both attempts.

The most controversial intervention came when the APC’s former National Legal Adviser, Inuwa Abdulkadir, was sent to mediate. According to Sani, not only did El-Rufai refuse to engage in dialogue, but he also ordered the demolition of Abdulkadir’s home. The act, Sani suggested, was a demonstration of the former governor’s unwillingness to tolerate dissent.

In his words; “For the whole period he served, from 2015 to 2023, there was never internal democracy in APC in Kaduna State. On three occasions, the national body sent three different people to reconcile the crisis in Kaduna State. He refused. The first committee was set up by Masari — if you can remember, the former governor of Katsina State. He didn’t listen to him. Segun Oni was sent to reconcile people in Kaduna State APC. He refused. The third was the former National legal adviser of the party Inuwa Abdulkadir. In the end, he even demolished his home. So he doesn’t believe in democracy,” he added.
