The President of the Credibility Group, Ide Goddy Uwazurike, described the conviction of Simon Ekpa for terrorism in Finland as a positive development for the South-East.

In an interview with The Sun, Uwazurike, who is also a former president of Aka Ikenga, cautioned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against underestimating the growing opposition coalition. He recalled that former President Goodluck Jonathan had made a similar mistake by disregarding the then-fledgling APC, which ultimately cost him power in 2015.

When asked about the country’s security situation, Uwazurike said he was at a loss for words. He compared Nigeria to troubled nations such as South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Venezuela, stressing that Nigeria was now on the same level with them in terms of insecurity.

He questioned why the president could not simply order the General Officers Commanding (GOCs) of the Nigerian Army to decisively move against criminals within a week, insisting that the army had the capacity to clear them out. Uwazurike argued that whenever the army retreated, terrorists and criminals quickly returned, citing the South-East as an example.

Further talking, he said, “There’s a forest between Imo and Anambra states, which is the base of the criminals led by Simon Ekpa.

“From time to time, the army will be based in Onitsha or some other place, and they would announce the next place they were going.

“And the criminals would run away. The military operatives hang around for some days and then go back.

“Nature abhors a vacuum and once they go back, the criminals will come back, so the business continues.”
