A lawyer, Jesutega Onokpasa, recently expressed his views on former Governor Yahaya Bello’s visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a live coverage by Arise TV from 11:08, Onokpasa said the EFCC declared Bello wanted but allowed him to leave when he appeared at their office in Abuja. He said after letting Bello go, the EFCC later attempted to arrest him at his residence at night
Onokpasa argued that such actions could lead Yahaya Bello to feel that his life was in danger. He questioned why the EFCC did not detain Bello during his initial visit if they were determined to arrest him.
In Onokpasa’s words: “You declared someone wanted, the person comes to your office and says here I am and you tell him to go home. Then at night you go to his house and start shooting in a residential neighborhood. I challenge any lawyer to refute that that person in law is entitled to feel that you are trying to assassinate him. Why did you not just take me to custody if you are so desperate to have me? I came to the police station, you did not arrest me. You told me to go back to my flat then in the middle of the night you start shooting. I have right to self preservation for God’s sake. That is Yahaya Bello’s fundamental human right”.
