According to a report by Leadership News, on Sunday, August 30, 2025, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Prof. Mike Ozekhome, has revealed how the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) once seized his money but he refused to be intimidated into silence.

Speaking while recounting his personal experience, the constitutional lawyer stressed the importance of lawyers standing up for justice, both for themselves and for the ordinary citizens they represent.

Narrating the incident, Ozekhome said: “EFCC seized my money, N75 million. I was doing a case for a client. Guess what? Some lawyers were advising me to forget about the case and not go to court. And I asked, ‘When have we become so scared, so afraid, that we cannot even take care of our own rights as lawyers, not to talk of other citizens?’ If you cannot fight for yourself, how can you fight for others?”

According to him, the incident exposed a worrying trend where some legal practitioners shy away from challenging injustice, even when their own rights are trampled upon.

He emphasized that if lawyers, who are meant to be the defenders of justice, choose silence in the face of oppression, then ordinary citizens will be left helpless.

Ozekhome maintained that courage and consistency are the hallmarks of legal advocacy.

He argued that the role of a lawyer is not merely to defend clients in court but also to be a voice against abuse of power, regardless of who is involved.
