According to a report by Punch Newspapers on Saturday, 28 June 2025, a 32-year-old farmer and writer, Wisdom Amedu has narrated his terrifying ordeal in the hands of kidnappers who stormed his home in Edo State, inflicting machete wounds and demanding ransom with one of them allegedly being a soldier.
Amedu who was rescued after several days in captivity, said the attack occurred in the early hours of March 17, 2025. “That night, at about 1 am, we were fast asleep when our dogs started barking. Then we heard gunshots. They shot one of the dogs. About five minutes later, they broke down our door. Men with guns stormed in, shouting and threatening us,” he recounted.
He revealed that the assailants, wielding AK-47 rifles and machetes, tied him up and began looting his home. “They asked who else was in the house. I told them my driver. I said I was a farmer. That’s when they started cutting me with machetes,” Amedu said.
The abductors blindfolded and dragged him into a forest, where he was held captive. “While in the bush, I realised one of them was a soldier. He wore a uniform, boots and gave commands. He was clearly part of the gang,” Amedu alleged.
His captors demanded a ransom from his family while subjecting him to beatings and psychological torture. After days of negotiations, he was eventually freed.
The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident, with a focus on identifying the alleged soldier involved.
The case has sparked outrage and renewed concern over rising insecurity and the suspected collusion of some security personnel with criminal elements.
