In a recent video on Channels Television, former Head of Service of Rivers State, Dr. George Nweke, has raised fresh concerns over the alleged misuse of state resources, questionable alliances, and financial compromise of labour unions under the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Nweke disclosed that during his tenure, he often stayed overnight at the Government House and became increasingly uncomfortable with the frequency of visits by Governor Bala Mohammed and other political stakeholders to Rivers State. He noted that during one of those visits, Governor Fubara expressed support for Bala Mohammed’s presidential ambition. However, Nweke stressed that his concern was not about political endorsements but about the large sums of public funds being spent on those visits, which he described as unnecessary.

He also drew attention to the activities of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, calling on the national leadership to caution the Rivers State Chapter against politicizing labour issues. According to him, he was privy to several private meetings between the Governor and labour leaders, during which money allegedly exchanged hands to compromise the integrity and neutrality of the union.

In a more troubling revelation, Nweke alleged that several clandestine meetings were held between Governor Fubara, his Chief of Staff, and known militant leaders. Although he was not part of these meetings, he claimed that each of them ended with large sums of money handed out in cash.

According to him, “On several occasions, I slept over at the Government House. It became uncomfortable when Governor Bala Mohammed and other stakeholders started visiting Rivers State frequently. During one of such visits, the Governor told me he would support Bala Mohammed for President. I was not concerned about who he supported but about the huge state resources spent on these visits.”

“I also call on the Nigeria Labour Congress to caution the Rivers State Chapter to avoid politicizing labour. I am privy to several private meetings between the Governor and labour leaders, where money exchanged hands to compromise the union.”

“More worrisome were several meetings between the Governor, his Chief of Staff, and some militant leaders. I was not allowed into such meetings, but each ended with large sums of money exchanged in cash. I wish to state categorically that Rivers people and Nigerians are the beneficiaries of the state of emergency in Rivers State—not Governor Fubara or Chief Nyesom Wike.
