In an interview with The Punch, the former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at the Defence Headquarters, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.), spoke on the recent reported coup plot, the growing insecurity in the country, and the arraignment of Nnamdi Kanu, among other national issues.
When asked about the recent rumours of a coup plot and what his message would be to Nigerians calling for a return to military rule, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.) said he had participated in the arrest and prosecution of several coup plotters during his service, including those involved in the Major Gideon Orkar coup and others.
He explained that, based on his experience and analysis of past attempts, the alleged recent plot did not appear credible.
Olawunmi stated that, from the available indicators, the supposed coup did not follow the typical planning structure of such operations. He remarked that, unless the individuals allegedly involved were inexperienced or acting on impulse, the plan seemed unrealistic and doomed to fail.
He added that coups driven by emotion or frustration were always unsuccessful, citing the Orkar coup as an example of how excessive passion and poor planning led to failure even before execution began.
He suggested that if the Federal Government was genuinely interested in understanding and preventing such threats, it should consult experienced military professionals like himself who had studied and handled similar situations in the past.
Olawunmi stressed that a coup was an aberration in any democratic system, warning that Nigeria must never return to military rule. Drawing from his years of service, he maintained that, despite its challenges, democracy remained far better for the country than any form of military government.
Further talking, he said, “People do not understand military men; do not let them get into power to govern. They do not operate with emotions. I’m not emotional, and that’s why I can talk like this. If you think that I have done something wrong, you can try and kill me, that is not a big deal.” View, More,
