Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to redeem his image in the wake of allegations regarding his involvement in her ongoing recall process.
Speaking to the press in a video obtained by News Central TV, Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed her frustration with the role INEC had played in facilitating the petition for her recall.
She accused the electoral commission of aiding the petitioners by providing them with the necessary guidance to submit their documents correctly after the initial submission lacked key information, including petitioners’ contact details.
This came after INEC confirmed receipt of the petition for her recall, despite earlier noting the absence of critical details.
The senator, who represents the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suggested that the recall petition was a politically motivated plot orchestrated by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
She stated that the timing of the petition, coupled with the alleged assistance from INEC, suggested a collaboration that sought to undermine her position as an elected representative.
In her address, Akpoti-Uduaghan also took the opportunity to address Professor Yakubu directly, encouraging him to act courageously in this critical moment of his tenure.
She told him that he should not fear the powerful interests behind the political pressure but rather focus on the opportunity to restore his credibility and reputation before retiring from office.
Akpoti-Uduaghan further asserted that Yakubu, who has served as INEC Chairman for several years, should be concerned with leaving behind a legacy of fairness and integrity rather than succumbing to external manipulation.
In her words: “INEC should do what is right. The chairman should not be afraid. He is going to retire soon. This is his last term. This is the time for him to redeem his image, especially after the conduct of the past elections and the issues raised in several electoral observer reports. The INEC chairman should do right by this recall; I know it’s fraudulent. The few signatures among the lot were collected by fraud and deceit, and many were just manipulated. It would be gruesome for such illegality to succeed in this day and age. All of this is just a plot to break me down and make me apologize and fall in line like every other senator.”
