Mohammed Lawal, a long-time political associate of former President Muhammadu Buhari, stated that Buhari would not be able to stop his loyalists from leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) if they chose to do so.
He made this remark in response to the series of political meetings taking place at Buhari’s residence in Kaduna.
According to The Punch, Lawal, who had served as the deputy director of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Council in 2015, explained that although Buhari had clearly expressed his decision to remain in the APC, he would still respect whatever choices his loyalists made.
Lawal further pointed out that the APC had given Buhari the platform to become president for two terms, which made it difficult to completely separate him from the party. However, he emphasized that there was only so much Buhari could do to persuade his supporters to stay committed to the APC.
While speaking on Muhammadu Buhari’s relevance, the associate said that Buhari remained a major figure within the political landscape of the North. He pointed out that there were very few former heads of state from the region who had gone through the full political process to become president. According to him, he did not believe there was anyone currently in the North who held the kind of political weight that Buhari did. He explained that while former leaders like Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar had become heads of state through their military backgrounds, and former President Shagari had passed away, Buhari stood out as a unique political figure in the region.
He said, “So naturally, politicians in the North, even those that are outside APC will look towards Buhari for political direction and advice, so do not be surprised if you see Buhari’s residence in Kaduna being turned into a political Mecca of some sort. I’m not surprised; Buhari is going to continue to be more relevant, especially as 2027 is going to be very tough politically for this country.”
Lawal also observed that opposition figures were seeking Buhari’s support well in advance because they recognized the significant electoral value he still held.
He stated that the former president would ultimately make the right decision, regardless of what anyone said about him.
