Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Alhmed Tinubu, has slammed a social media post likening Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to Singapore’s late founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.
According to Vanguard, the controversial comparison was made by education influencer Alex Onyia, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Peter Obi is like Lee Kwan Yu of Singapore.
Leaders like him come once in a generation.”
The post quickly went viral, attracting support from many Obi followers who applauded the statement.
However, Onanuga reacted sharply in the comment section, describing the comparison as “amusing” and “insulting to Nigerians.”
He also mocked Onyia for misspelling Lee’s name and questioned the credibility of the comparison.
“I find posts like Onyia’s very amusing,” Onanuga stated.
“He is possibly posting for some idiots to gobble everything he says.
How can anyone in his right senses compare Peter Obi with the late Singaporean leader, Lee Kuan Yew?”
He went further to criticize Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, alleging a lack of development and vision.
“Peter Obi was not an exemplary governor.
He didn’t show any vision of development.
He did not build a classroom, as has been said irrefutably.
Indeed, he left Awka worse than he met it,” Onanuga claimed.
Using a Yoruba proverb, he added: “If a man wants to be sharp and bright, he shows the traits in infancy,” before urging Onyia to “delete your egregious joke.”
Lee Kuan Yew led Singapore from 1959 to 1990 and is widely credited with transforming the country into a thriving, corruption-free economy governed by meritocracy and strong institutions.
