Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a high-profile ceremony held at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.

The governor explained that his decision came after three months of extensive consultations with key stakeholders across Akwa Ibom, emphasizing the need for alignment with the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu and a progressive path forward for the state.

The defection, however, triggered immediate reactions within the state government, notably from Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port.

In a bold move, Commissioner Ememobong resigned from his position, citing his principles and long-standing opposition to the APC as reasons for refusing to follow Governor Eno into the new party.

His resignation has been widely seen as a stand of conviction amid the political realignment.

Reacting to Ini Ememobong’s decision, Dele Momodu, the renowned publisher of Ovation magazine and former presidential aspirant, publicly praised the commissioner’s principled stance.

In a post on his official Instagram account, Momodu wrote, “Now, this is what is called principle… There’s nothing wrong with decamping… But there’s everything wrong with forcing others to join you in your moment of GIDDINESS… I’m so proud of you my mentee, Ini.”

Momodu’s remarks highlight the importance of individual conviction in politics, especially during times of party realignment.

He acknowledged that while defection is a common feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, it should never come at the expense of personal beliefs or be imposed on others.

Governor Eno’s move to the APC is seen as strategic, aiming to leverage the federal government’s support for state projects and initiatives.

Meanwhile, Ini Ememobong’s resignation serves as a reminder that political loyalty is often balanced against personal principles, and not all members of a political family will necessarily follow the same path.
