Hon. Inuwa Mohammed Bassi, the House of Representatives member representing the Mayo-Belwa, Jada, Ganye, and Toungo Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated that only a southern presidential candidate could secure victory for the party in the 2027 elections.
In an exclusive interview with Arewa PUNCH on Friday in Yola, Bassi remarked that the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 election, was lacking the widespread support and backing necessary to make it a reality.
He further pointed out that the party’s zoning arrangement did not favour the northern region in producing a presidential candidate for the 2027 polls.
On the massive decamping from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress by some party bigwigs, Bassi said that their movement is a political trade fair that can not affect the party in 2027.
He said, “If they are politically powerful, why did PDP not win in 2023? In politics, people decamp to seek positions and attract patronage from their new party. Not that they have anything new to add”
Hon. Inuwa Mohammed Bassi expressed confidence that by 2026, millions of members from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties would be eager to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He criticized the APC for lacking any credible project to form the basis of its campaign strategy.
Referring to recent activities by the federal government, Bassi questioned the relevance of launching major infrastructure projects amidst widespread hardship. He pointed out that just a week earlier, the Minister of Works had been touring various states to flag off the construction of super highways, and he questioned whether such roads were intended for people struggling with hunger or for those no longer living.
Bassi went on to say that by 2026, it would become clear to the APC that Nigerians no longer supported the party, and he maintained that the PDP would reclaim power in the 2027 general elections.
Using Adamawa State as an example, he stated that Governor Ahmadu Fintiri had firmly established the PDP in the state, making it impossible for any other party to uproot its presence.
He added that Fintiri’s achievements had earned the party deep loyalty among the people. He also criticized political opportunism, saying there was no space in Adamawa for individuals who claimed to be APC members by day and PDP loyalists by night, concluding that no other party had room to thrive in the state.
