According to a report by Times of Israel, on August 28, 2025, Israeli silence in the face of continuing calls for a truce in the Gaza Strip has irritated Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty.

Abdelatty stressed that Egyptian and Qatari mediation is ongoing despite Israel’s noncooperation during a news conference held on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“Despite the unfortunate lack of responsiveness from the Israeli side and its insistence on its position,” Abdelatty said, adding that the mediation efforts of Qatar and Egypt have not ceased. He emphasised once again that both nations will keep pushing for a ceasefire with Israel and their regional and international allies.

In an effort to end the fighting in Gaza, U.S. mediator Steve Witkoff has proposed a 60-day truce that is conditional on the release of hostages. In return for the ceasefire, Hamas agreed to release ten of the Israeli hostages who are still alive last week.

Israel believes that at least 20 of the 50 captives held by the terrorist group are alive and well. Israel, on the other hand, has not replied to the offer and is instead pressing for a final resolution to the war as well as the release of all hostages.

Without assurances addressing long-term security concerns, Israeli officials maintain they will not consent to a partial exchange or temporary ceasefire. In the midst of the escalating violence in Gaza, Abdelatty’s comments underscore the persistent diplomatic impasse.

Although mediators are still looking at potential ceasefire channels, Israel appears to be taking a cautious approach, prioritising a comprehensive agreement before suspending armed actions.

There is increasing international demand for a peaceful resolution that safeguards civilians while resolving security and hostage issues, and the situation is still tense due to the growing humanitarian requirements.
