Former Jigawa State governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has said he will support the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 elections, even though he plans to remain in the PDP.

According to Leadership, Lamido explained that his approach would be similar to that of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who is still a PDP member but supports the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

About two weeks ago, Lamido and other senior PDP leaders attended a meeting in Abuja where they agreed to support the ADC. That meeting led to the recent unveiling of the ADC as the main opposition platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Some PDP members close to Wike have already said they will back Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

However, speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Lamido said Nigeria’s political system does not encourage division into factions, but he would rather support the right candidate than blindly follow a political party.

He said many political parties in Nigeria are currently facing serious internal problems and these issues must be addressed. According to him, the PDP’s troubles are caused by its own actions.

Lamido also said he is not afraid of anyone in the party and is determined to stay in the PDP to help fix it. He blamed the PDP’s problems on hypocrisy and selfishness, but stressed that his main goal is to help improve the country. He plans to stay in the PDP while supporting ADC’s broader goal of societal progress.
