The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, has expressed strong views on the state of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, during an interview with VANGUARD.
Nwosu reacted to ongoing talks about a possible coalition of opposition parties.
He said many of Nigeria’s governors, regardless of party, are not reliable when it comes to real political change.
According to him, most governors depend on money to win elections and cannot win their wards without it.
He also said that once elected, many governors become silent.
He believes this happens because they fear being targeted by anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC.
As a result, they avoid challenging the president or speaking out on national issues.
Nwosu dismissed the idea that governors are needed to drive a successful coalition.
He pointed to the 2023 general elections, where the Labour Party, led by Peter Obi, won in key states such as Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and the Federal Capital Territory.
He noted that these victories came without the support of any state governor or powerful political figures.
He added that the only party that stood by the Labour Party during that time was the ADC.
He believes that with proper planning and unity, opposition parties can challenge the ruling party in 2027.
Nwosu also hinted that ADC is open to coalition talks, but said that focus should remain on credible leadership, not just political positions.
“I get offended when people talk about governors, be they PDP, APC or of any other party. Most of them are not sure of winning their wards without money and because they criminalize themselves once they got into office, they lose their voices for public advocacy or to stand against the president for fear of EFCC. So that is what is going on. But come to think of it, Labour Party with Peter Obi won Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and FCT without any governor or support of any strong politician and political party except ADC,” he said.
