Chief Onwuka Ukwa, a founding member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has urged leaders of the new political coalition to adopt Peter Obi as their presidential candidate for the 2027 election, as reported by The Sun on Saturday, 19 July, 2025.
Ukwa said Obi is the only candidate in the coalition with a strong chance of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He warned that presenting another person as the candidate could split the group and hand victory to the APC by default.
The elder statesman asked other prominent politicians in the coalition, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-governors Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir El-Rufai, to step aside and support Obi for the sake of national interest.
Ukwa explained that the coalition was formed to rescue Nigeria from its many problems.
He said that only a candidate with wide public acceptance can achieve that goal.
He recalled how Muhammadu Buhari was the popular choice in 2015 and won through a united opposition.
He believes Peter Obi is the most acceptable candidate for 2027.
According to him, Peter Obi is not desperate for power but is committed to serving the country.
He said Obi has shown clear vision, character, and capacity to lead.
Ukwa advised the coalition to avoid internal division.
He said unity and a single candidate would give the coalition a real chance of success.
“I believe that this coalition is formed to produce a candidate for national acceptance that can resolve the nations’ intractable problems. In 2015, Buhari was the acceptable candidate.
In 2027, the consensus candidate that will appeal and unify the entire nation is Peter Obi. He is the only winning presidential candidate in that coalition for 2027. Any other conspiracy that throws up another candidate will simply hand over the victory to the APC to continue. We must subdue our ego and select a candidate that is not hungry for power, but a candidate that is hungry to serve, and it is Peter Obi. Let us not misplace this opportunity to move the nation forward,” Ukwa stressed.
