Political tension is mounting in Rivers State as former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, prepares to address his supporters on Wednesday regarding his next political move following his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Vanguard, Amaechi’s planned address, coming just weeks after attending the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, is expected to clarify his stance on the 2027 general elections.
A source close to the former governor disclosed that he may use the opportunity to formally announce his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside supporters from both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to him.
An APC chieftain, who requested anonymity, stated that both major parties in the state are facing internal crises, adding that the ADC’s rise poses a serious challenge to political structures loyal to President Bola Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The source blamed the ongoing political unrest on the treatment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, alleging that he has been stripped of his constitutional authority since March 18 following what was described as an “illegal declaration of emergency rule” by President Tinubu.
“The people of Rivers State have been denied democratic dividends for over four months,” he said.
Amaechi, in his July 1 resignation letter to the APC chairman in Ward 8, Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area, cited a loss of faith in the party’s founding ideals.
He pledged to work with “patriotic Nigerians” to rescue the country from what he called the APC’s “failure, pain and anguish.
Political observers speculate Amaechi could become the ADC’s presidential candidate for 2027, given his national appeal and extensive political experience.
