A former presidential candidate has warned that Nigeria cannot rely on Chinese support to defend against potential American military intervention, citing historical precedents where China failed to prevent US actions despite strong opposition.

Adamu Garba made the assessment during an interview with Daily Trust from 2:18, characterizing Chinese statements as strategic posturing rather than meaningful defense commitments. “China coming on board is just a factor of strategic rivalry. Whenever the U.S. goes to the west, China will naturally go to the east. But it has no bearing upon the stance of the United States when they want to project their national interest,” he stated.

The former APC presidential candidate provided multiple examples of Chinese opposition failing to deter American military actions. “You’ve seen it historically. China opposed the invasion of Afghanistan. It didn’t stop the United States from staying there for 20 years. Similarly in Iraq, it didn’t stop them. In fact, most recently, the biggest, most strategic ally of China in Central Asia is Iran. China vehemently, strongly stopped Trump or the U.S. from invading Iran for whatever reason. Yet, you know, Trump bombed Iranian nuclear facilities, and they did nothing, absolutely. Look at Gaza. China was strongly against the genocide in Gaza, but they couldn’t do nothing. So it’s just strategic rivalry. So anybody that is thinking that if China is talking, they are coming to fight on our behalf,” Garba said.

Garba argued that Chinese economic interests in Nigeria actually create vulnerabilities rather than incentives for military protection against the United States.

He noted that China has substantial losses to consider if America acts against Nigeria, pointing out that numerous Chinese companies operate in the country and are currently experiencing financial difficulties.

According to the former presidential candidate, many Chinese firms are complaining about unpaid debts for services they have rendered in Nigeria. This economic reality, Garba suggested, further undermines any expectation that China would translate rhetorical opposition into actual military defense of Nigeria. View, More,
