Nigerian lawyer and human rights advocate, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has responded to a recent court ruling directing former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and others to compensate N900 million.

Odinkalu shared his reaction in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday.

As reported by Vanguard, the Federal High Court in Kaduna issued a judgement directing El-Rufai and five others to compensate with N900 million for the unlawful arrest and detention of elders from the Adara community.

The incident, which dates back to 2019, has now culminated in this legal decision. Following the court’s ruling, Odinkalu expressed approval, pointing out a shift in El-Rufai’s fortunes since leaving office.

He remarked that while El-Rufai was in power, he consistently won court cases, but now that he is no longer governor, the trend has reversed.

In Odinkalu’s words on X:

“While he was Kaduna governor, El-Rufai could not lose in court. Now that he is no longer governor, he can’t stop losing.”
