Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of favouring one ethnic group in top government positions, during an interview with PUNCH.
He was asked if he had tried to reach out to the president about challenges in northern Nigeria.
Lawal responded sharply, he said there was no need to contact the president because the pattern of appointments already showed clear bias.
According to him, almost every major appointment made by the president seemed to favour people of Yoruba origin.
He mentioned that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the Minister of Finance were all Yoruba.
He suggested that the president might not even realize how unfair this looks to other groups in the country.
Lawal said the only thing the government probably doesn’t do is write official documents in Yoruba.
He joked that he wouldn’t know because he doesn’t read their memos, but he believed it was possible.
He also described the current administration as one that has been “commandeered” by a small group.
“Are you saying he doesn’t notice that every appointment or employment recommendation that reaches his desk favours a Yoruba man? Are you saying he doesn’t see that the CBN Governor, FIRS Chairman, Finance Minister, and others are all Yoruba? The only thing they probably don’t do in this government though I’m not even sure is write memos in Yoruba. How would I know? I don’t read their memos. But it’s possible. This is their government. They have appropriated and commandeered it. Everyone else is just a serf,” he said.
