Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has criticized late President Muhammadu Buhari for his consistent reliance on medical treatment abroad while failing to invest in Nigeria’s healthcare system during his eight-year tenure

In a video shared by TV Platinum from 5:44, Sowore condemned Buhari’s medical trips to London, accusing him of spending excessive public funds on healthcare that could have been developed at home.

He highlighted the irony of a leader who ruled the country for two terms but could not establish a hospital of comparable standard within Nigeria.

“Buhari went to hospital and he was spending 3,500 pounds every night in London. He was president for 8 years and he couldn’t build hospital here,” Sowore stated.

The activist said Buhari’s actions exposed a deep disregard for the wellbeing of the Nigerian people, many of whom are left to suffer under a broken healthcare system. He added that Buhari’s frequent travels to the United Kingdom for medical reasons were emblematic of the ruling elite’s detachment from the reality of ordinary Nigerians.

According to Sowore, the former president’s failure to prioritize healthcare infrastructure contributed to needless deaths and suffering, especially during critical moments such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sowore’s comments come amid growing frustration over the state of public hospitals in Nigeria, where underfunding, lack of equipment, and poor working conditions continue to drive medical professionals abroad.

His remarks reflect a wider sentiment among Nigerians who have long criticized government officials for seeking medical care overseas while neglecting the nation’s own health institutions.

The former presidential aspirant reiterated his call for accountable leadership, insisting that no Nigerian leader should access foreign healthcare until the country’s hospitals meet acceptable standards.
