In an interview with The Punch correspondent, Nuradeen Mahe, a grandson of the late President Shehu Shagari, spoke on the ex-president’s life, values and legacy.
When Nuradeen Mahe was asked whether he believed former President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to accord his grandfather, the late President Shehu Shagari, the same honour and state burial he received from President Bola Tinubu was due to political differences, he said it was painful and disappointing.
He claimed when is grandfather died Buhari didn’t come the day he was buried, but came the next day and didn’t spend much of his time.
When Nuradeen Mahe was asked how his family and community reacted to the manner in which the Federal Government handled Shagari’s burial, he said their reaction was not one of surprise.
He said, “Remember, Muhammadu Buhari was the one who toppled his government.”
He stated that although former President Buhari claimed to stand for justice, he was the one who acted with hostility. Nonetheless, he emphasized that President Shehu Shagari never held a grudge.
“In fact, he helped Buhari’s military career. He appointed him as GOC after a close confidant lobbied on his behalf,” he added.
Mahe further claimed that when a list of names had already been finalized, President Shagari personally added Buhari’s name by hand, indicating that he had played a role in shaping Buhari’s career.
He added that the community in Sokoto was not pleased with how Shagari was treated. According to him, no one was happy—it was disheartening to see someone who had benefited greatly from Shagari’s goodwill fail to honour him in death.
