With the 2027 elections gradually drawing closer, political activity in northern Nigeria is intensifying, particularly around former President Muhammadu Buhari. What appear to be festive courtesy visits by prominent northern politicians are, in fact, strategic efforts to gain Buhari’s endorsement and forge alliances. Deputy Political Editor Raymond Mordi notes that these interactions are laying the groundwork for potential political shifts ahead of the polls.
According to The Nation, Buhari—despite being out of office for two years—is reemerging as a powerbroker in the North. Behind-the-scenes meetings are ongoing in locations such as Daura and Kaduna, where politicians are reportedly seeking his backing for their 2027 ambitions. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and other allies recently held a private meeting with Buhari in Daura.
Chief Chekwas Okorie of APGA believes Buhari’s loyalty now lies more with his former CPC comrades than with the ruling APC. He predicts that should these loyalists break away to contest under a new party, Buhari’s influence could swing votes away from President Tinubu—especially in the Northwest. Okorie cited Nasir El-Rufai’s earlier visit to Buhari during a period of friction with the APC as the beginning of a potential defection wave.
