According to a report by Punch, on Friday, July 18, 2025, the daughters of the late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, have paid heartfelt tributes to their father, praising his personal virtues and reflecting on the deep impact his loss has had on their lives.

Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a long illness, is being mourned across Nigeria, with many remembering him not just as a leader, but as a man of humility and principle.

In an emotional interview with BBC Hausa, Aisha Hanan Buhari, one of Buhari’s younger daughters, described the pain of losing her father, saying it felt like a part of her had been taken away.

“What I will miss most about him is his sense of humour. I look up to him as a part of me,” she said, recalling the strong bond she shared with her father.

Hanan expressed appreciation to Nigerians who, despite differing political views, continued to show respect for her father.

“We have nothing to say to them except thank you, thank God,” she said.

She emphasized that Buhari always had the country’s best interests at heart, referring to him as “one of the common people,” a reflection of his humility and approachability, even as a former president.

Hadiza Muhammadu Buhari, widely known as Nana, another of the late president’s daughters, also shared her memories of her father’s values and daily interactions.

“During his treatment, I went to London to check on him. After he got better, I decided to return to Nigeria. When I told him, ‘Dad, I’m going,’ he said, ‘Where are you going?’ I told him I was returning to Nigeria, and he said, ‘Greet Nigerians,’” Nana recounted fondly.

Nana spoke of their close relationship, revealing that her father often called her “Madam Nana.”

“We chat, joke, and laugh together,” she said, highlighting the playful and affectionate side of the former president.

One of the memories she recounted highlighted the strong moral values Buhari passed on to his children.

She recalled an instance when he gave them money to purchase textbooks. After buying the books, she had some leftover money and used part of it to buy sweets.

Upon returning and informing him of what she had done, she handed over the remaining change. Buhari gently corrected her, saying, “Nana, that’s not right.

When someone sends you to buy something, you must return all the remaining money. Only if they choose to give it back to you should you accept it. Never take what doesn’t belong to you.”

Reflecting on her father’s personality, Nana described him as “a patient and tolerant person. Dad doesn’t like noise. You can’t insult him and he will retaliate, unless he keeps an eye on you. He was humorous, social, and easygoing.”
