According to a report published by Punch on November 1, 2025, Ali Ndume has revealed what Nigeria should do after being labeled a “Country of Particular Concern” by the United States over alleged religious persecution. The former Senate Leader emphasized that the nation must proactively correct misconceptions and present its side of the story to avoid diplomatic fallout.
Speaking on the issue, Ndume said, “We should engage the American government by presenting facts and figures. By engaging the US government, we should demand that they hear the other side of the story from the Nigerian government and the Muslim community.”
The U.S. designation comes after President Donald Trump claimed that Christianity in Nigeria is under an “existential threat” and placed the country on a watchlist for severe violations of religious freedom. Countries on this list can face sanctions, travel restrictions for officials, and limitations on military aid.
Ndume argued that the Nigerian government and lawmakers had ignored earlier warnings and failed to act diplomatically to address the growing misconception internationally. He stressed that violence in Nigeria affects all citizens, regardless of religion, and should not be portrayed as targeting Christians alone.
The senator called for immediate engagement with seasoned diplomats and the American embassy in Nigeria to ensure the country’s narrative is accurately represented. He highlighted that presenting factual information could help Nigeria shift from being labeled a “Country of Particular Concern” to a “Country of Special Concern,” which could attract international support in addressing security challenges.
Ndume’s comments align with President Bola Tinubu’s rejection of the U.S. classification, with the president insisting that Nigeria’s democratic framework guarantees religious liberty and that the label misrepresents the nation’s realities.
By taking a diplomatic approach, Nigeria can clarify its position, protect its international image, and strengthen cooperation with global partners to maintain peace and security for all communities. View, More,
