In a fiery outburst that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has launched a scathing attack on the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking at a private gathering in Abuja over the weekend, El-Rufai declared that the APC has lost its way and vowed to mobilize forces to oust Tinubu in the 2027 presidential elections.
“We’ll send Tinubu packing in 2027,” El-Rufai reportedly said, according to sources close to the event. He accused the APC of failing Nigerians on key issues like economic reforms, security, and corruption. “The party I helped build has become a shadow of itself, riddled with incompetence and self-interest,” he added. El-Rufai, who served as a minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari and was a key APC figure, has been increasingly vocal about his disillusionment since leaving office in 2023.
Turning his attention to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, El-Rufai suggested that Obi should abandon the LP. “Peter Obi has no reason to remain in LP,” he stated. “The party is fractured and lacks the national structure needed to challenge the status quo. He should join a broader coalition if he truly wants change.” This comes amid rumors of a potential alliance between El-Rufai, Obi, and other opposition figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to form a new political platform aimed at unseating Tinubu.
El-Rufai’s comments have sparked mixed reactions. APC spokesperson Felix Morka dismissed them as “the rantings of a bitter ex-governor seeking relevance.” Meanwhile, Obi’s camp has remained tight-lipped, though insiders hint at ongoing discussions about party switches ahead of 2027.
Political analysts see this as a sign of deepening cracks within the APC and a reshaping of opposition dynamics. With Nigeria grappling with inflation, fuel shortages, and insecurity, such bold statements could galvanize dissatisfied voters. El-Rufai, known for his no-nonsense style, has positioned himself as a kingmaker in the north, where Tinubu’s support has waned.
As the 2027 race heats up, all eyes are on whether this rhetoric translates into action. Will El-Rufai’s call lead to a mega-merger, or is it just another storm in Nigeria’s turbulent political teacup? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: the battle lines are being drawn early. View, More,
