Former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to use military force in Nigeria, describing the rhetoric as dangerous and misleading. Trump recently announced that he ordered the Pentagon to “prepare for possible action” in Nigeria, citing alleged massacres of Christians and labeling the country a “nation of particular concern.”
Sowore cautioned that foreign military interventions rarely solve deep-rooted problems, noting the historical failures of similar efforts elsewhere. He stated, “They failed to secure peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Syria, and they won’t bring salvation to Nigeria through bombs or boots on the ground.” The activist emphasized that Nigerians should not rely on external powers for security or deliverance.
He further argued that Nigeria’s challenges—ranging from religious violence and herder-farmer conflicts to corruption and weak governance—require accountable leadership and domestic solutions. Sowore criticized what he called performative foreign concern, insisting that sustainable security must come from within, through institutional reforms and strong political leadership.
Highlighting the need for national renewal, he warned that military interventions could exacerbate existing tensions and destabilize the country further. Sowore called for political accountability, community-driven reconciliation, and protection of all citizens regardless of faith, as the only viable path to lasting peace.
With Trump’s aggressive stance drawing international attention and sparking debate, Sowore’s warning adds a prominent Nigerian voice cautioning against foreign military involvement, stressing that true salvation for the nation lies in self-driven governance and reform. View, More,
