In a recent interview on Signature TV from 2:17, Joachim Ezeji, Chief Executive Officer of the Gulf of Guinea Risk and Resilience Institute, expressed concern over internal divisions within Igbo political leadership regarding the 2027 presidential race.

Ezeji argued that the concept of Igbo political unity is being weakened from within. “The idea of an Igbo agenda, Igbo presidency, is being seriously undermined by the same Igbos who should be championing it,” he stated, adding that “there’s no consensus” among Igbo political leaders.

The security analyst noted a contrasting pattern of support for former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. “The only consensus we see is a pan-Nigerian consensus where people from across Nigeria, beyond the Igbo boundaries, are rooting for Peter Obi to be the president,” Ezeji observed.

However, he criticized what he described as the “Igbo glitterati politically” for working against Obi’s presidential prospects for 2027. Ezeji pointed to prominent political figures holding appointments at state and federal levels, specifically mentioning that “even the governor of Anambra State, in the home state of Peter Obi, feels he should be the one that will be the president” and that “the minister of works feels he should be the one that will be president.”

According to Ezeji, these competing ambitions create a problematic timeline. “While the governor wants to finish his term and come and become president, the minister also wants to, they want Igbos to wait till 2031,” he explained, asserting that “this does not speak well of the Igbo agenda.”

The institute CEO concluded with a call to action, saying, “I challenge every Nigerian who believes in the philosophy of Peter Obi to keep rallying around him so that these stumbling blocks we have in Igboland to that presidency will be put to shame and their political career will die a natural death.” View, More,
