Former Kaduna State senator Shehu Sani shared his views on the implications of power concerning the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrants. He stated that when individuals hold power, they may feel empowered to ignore or defy these arrest warrants. However, the dynamic shifts drastically once they lose that power.

In a post on his verified X page, Sani cited historical examples to illustrate his point. He mentioned the cases of Omar Al Bashir, the former president of Sudan, and Charles Taylor, the ex-president of Liberia. Both men faced serious accusations and arrest warrants from the ICC, but while in power, they managed to evade accountability.

Sani’s remarks highlight a significant issue regarding the enforcement of international law and the challenges faced when political leaders elude justice due to their positions of authority. The discussion brings to light the critical balance between power and accountability, particularly in regions plagued by political instability and governance challenges.

On his Verified X page he said, “When you are in power you can defy or ignore the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court, not when you are out of power.Omar Al Bashir of Sudan and Charles Taylor of Liberia are some examples.”
