A statement attributed to Joe Igbokwe has sparked widespread discussion after he suggested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could pursue a constitutional amendment to secure an additional term in office if re-elected.
In the post, Igbokwe argued that the current political structure in Nigeria places the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a strong position to influence constitutional changes. He pointed to the party’s dominance across key levels of government, including control of a majority of state governments and significant representation in the National Assembly.
According to the claims, the APC currently holds power in a large number of states, alongside a strong presence in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Igbokwe suggested that these numbers could be crucial in meeting the legal requirements needed to amend Nigeria’s constitution.
He outlined that any constitutional amendment would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, as well as approval from at least 24 state assemblies. He further argued that, based on the current political alignment, these conditions may already be within reach.
The statement added that if President Tinubu is re-elected, he could choose to initiate such an amendment process, potentially paving the way for an additional term. Igbokwe emphasized that the law operates independently of emotions, suggesting that political realities and numbers play a more decisive role in such matters.
The post also referenced past political attempts, noting that similar ambitions may have succeeded under previous administrations if the same level of political advantage had existed at the time. Read_More…
