In a recent video shared on Echo 360 TV from 27:13, Martins Amaewhule, Speaker of the 10th Assembly of the Rivers State House of Assembly, addressed the financial state of the government accounts and the urgent need to tackle the challenges facing public services in Rivers State, particularly in education and infrastructure.
According to the video, “As at the time Administrator Ibas left, he kept over ₦600 billion in Rivers State’s account”, highlighting that despite the substantial funds left behind, critical sectors such as education continue to suffer neglect. The Speaker expressed concern that these resources had not translated into tangible improvements for schools, roads, and other essential services.
Amaewhule noted that public schools, especially primary and secondary institutions in urban and rural areas, remain in deplorable conditions. He stressed that children are still forced to learn in classrooms without roofs, chairs, doors, or functional facilities, while some teachers teach multiple classes simultaneously due to severe staffing shortages.
The Speaker also emphasized that the state’s executive council must take urgent action to address these systemic failures. He called for the immediate implementation of oversight mechanisms, including summoning relevant ministry officials to account for the mismanagement of funds and ensure that budget allocations reach the intended beneficiaries.
Lawmakers warned that continued neglect of public schools could have long-term consequences for the state’s human capital. They urged that the ₦600 billion reported in the accounts be leveraged to rehabilitate schools, provide necessary teaching staff, and restore essential facilities for children’s education.
In conclusion, Amaewhule reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to holding the executive accountable and ensuring that public funds are used effectively. He stressed that the legislature would continue to press for transparency and practical action to improve the quality of life for the people of Rivers State. View, More,
