Peacemaker Azuegbulam, a Nigerian soldier and special forces operative, has recounted a chilling first-hand account of the intensity of Boko Haram’s firepower and the heavy toll it took on him during an ambush that cost him his leg.
Speaking during an emotional episode of The Lucky Udu Experience, Azuegbulam gave insight into the dangerous reality on the front lines and the extent of Boko Haram’s preparedness for war. He described how heavily armed the insurgents were, often arriving for ambushes in large numbers.
“When Boko Haram are coming for ambush, they come in troops like 200 individuals, each loaded with their personal rifle. They also carry support weapons, the ones that can fire from 1,000 meters and above,” Azuegbulam stated.
He explained that after completing his Passing Out Parade (POP) in 2019, he underwent special forces training and was later deployed to Maiduguri as part of operations to dismantle Boko Haram camps. It was during one of these missions that he suffered a life-changing injury.
“On November 18, during one of our missions to capture Boko Haram terrorists in their hideout, I was shot with AA (anti-aircraft gun), a weapon usually used for shooting planes. That was the weapon Boko Haram fired at me. My leg got detached immediately,” he said.
Azuegbulam noted that the terrorists are often better armed than government troops and operate with a level of coordination that gives them significant tactical advantage in rural battles.
Despite the severity of his injury, Azuegbulam has remained committed to telling his story and advocating for better equipment and support for frontline soldiers.
He emphasized the need for Nigerians to understand the sacrifices being made by the military and the magnitude of the threat posed by insurgent groups like Boko Haram.
His story is both a call for improved military funding and a reminder of the physical and emotional cost paid by those who defend the nation from internal threats.
