Bishop of the Diocese of Oji River, Enugu State, Iyke Egbuonu has revealed fresh details shared by detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, during a recent visit to the Sokoto prison.
Speaking on AIT Live News from 2:10, the bishop disclosed that Kanu provided a breakdown of what he described as different categories of “unknown gunmen” operating across the South-East and also spoke about a letter he personally wrote to Simon Ekpa while in DSS custody.
According to Bishop Egbuonu, the conversation was focused on growing security concerns in the region and the various violent attacks often attributed to IPOB. He said Kanu expressed frustration over the misconceptions surrounding the armed groups and insisted that several of them operate independently of him or IPOB’s leadership.
The bishop said Kanu identified at least three to four groups responsible for violence in the region. One of the groups, according to Kanu, consists of individuals allegedly imported into the South-East to destabilize the area and link the unrest to him. Another category, Kanu reportedly noted, is made up of what he described as “economic unknown gunmen”, criminal elements exploiting the insecurity to extort residents and profit from the chaos. The third, he said, is connected to activities directed from abroad.
Bishop Egbuonu said Kanu specifically mentioned writing a handwritten letter to Simon Ekpa in Finland, distancing himself from the actions linked to him. “From him I discovered that about three to four unknown gunmen in the east. One of them according to him is those imported from outside to destabilize the east so they can tag him with it. Number two is what he called economic unknown gunmen, those who are making money from the situation just leveraging on that to sap people and the other one is the guy in Finland whom he said he wrote a letter with his hand to him to let him know that he is not supporting what he is doing,” he said.
