In a candid interview with SYMFONI TV from 03:28, The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has overridden the veto of Governor Siminialayi Fubara on three key pieces of legislation. The bills, passed and transmitted to the governor a month ago, include the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill, 2024.
During a 94th legislative sitting held on Thursday, lawmakers loyal to the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, exercised their constitutional right to override Fubara’s refusal to assent to the bills.
“We all know that if this House, by a third majority vote, in favor of these bills one more time, this bill will now become law for Rivers State irrespective of the governor’s decision to withhold his assent,” Speaker Amaewhule stated. “And that is why we have brought these bills to the House again for reconsideration.”
The Speaker emphasized that the process was procedural, with lawmakers simply voting on whether to override the governor’s veto. “The clerk has mentioned three of them, and let me say that we’ll start with the first one. The House will vote one way or the other. You know that this procedure does not require us to go into the details of the bills anymore, we only merely vote whether to override the governor or not.”
The decision marks a significant development in the ongoing political tussle between the executive and the legislature in Rivers State, signaling a growing division within the state’s political leadership.
