In a recent interview on News Central TV from 0:17, journalist Theophilus Akatugba has questioned the dominant narrative surrounding the persistent violence in Benue State, Nigeria.
Addressing widespread claims that attackers are targeting communities to seize land, Akatugba asked, “If it’s really that they are killing in Benue to take over the land, why haven’t they taken at least 20 percent or 100 percent?”
His remarks come as attacks continue to ravage parts of Benue. Just days ago, coordinated assaults in Gwer West and Apa local government areas left at least 20 people dead, according to local authorities.
The attacks are part of a protracted conflict often attributed to tensions between farmers and nomadic herders over land use and natural resources. While Akatugba’s comment casts doubt on the alleged motive of land-grabbing, others argue that such claims are not unfounded.
In response to these continued attacks, local communities have taken security into their own hands. Civilian guards in areas like Agatu have reportedly repelled attacks though not without suffering losses. Residents say that communities such as Egwuma have faced multiple assaults leaving many displaced and living in fear.
