The global spotlight on the killings in Benue State continues to intensify as international interest surges, with foreign journalists and humanitarian observers expressing their intention to visit the troubled region.
Rev. Fr. Patrick Alumuku, Director of Communications for the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, revealed this during an interview on Arise TV.
“Today, I received calls from Germany, Italy, from France. There are people who want to come and visit. There are journalists who want to come and see what is happening here and report back to their people,” Fr. Alumuku disclosed during the broadcast.
He emphasized that the wave of international concern is a sign that the crisis is finally receiving the attention it deserves after years of being underreported. According to Fr. Alumuku, the recent interest has been sparked by global advocacy, including statements from key international bodies.
“I want to thank the United Nations for their voice today, to say this is unacceptable, and the United Nations Secretary-General who has spoken. I want to thank Amnesty International,” he said, acknowledging the growing pressure from rights organizations and global leaders.
Benue State, a region in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has suffered repeated attacks from armed groups, leaving communities devastated. The Catholic Church has consistently condemned the violence and called for urgent intervention.
Fr. Alumuku stressed the importance of continued international attention and action, stating that the presence of journalists and observers will help document the truth and hold perpetrators accountable. He also urged the Nigerian government to protect citizens and ensure justice for victims.
“This is not just a Nigerian issue anymore. The world is watching,” he concluded.
