Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Operation, Major General Emeka Onumajuru, has announced that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji is under close military surveillance and faces imminent elimination by the armed forces.

In a recent Channels TV interview from 1:03, Gen. Onumajuru emphasized the military’s firm stance against the bandit leader. “There’s absolutely no forth and back between Bello Turji and the Armed Forces. And as I speak, Bello Turji is hiding; he’s completely in hiding, and the Armed Forces is tracking him,” he stated.

The Defence Chief assured the public of eventual success while acknowledging the complex nature of counter-terrorism operations. “Tracking a bandit leadership or tracking an asymmetric terrorist leadership at times takes time. It’s just for us to be patient. All Nigerians should be patient on this issue, and the positive results will soon come,” he said.

The military has already achieved significant victories against Turji’s organization. In January 2025, forces eliminated Aminu Kanawa, Turji’s second-in-command, along with 31 fighters and Turji’s son during a counter-terrorism operation. Despite these successes, the Zamfara state bandit leader remains elusive.

Recent developments highlight the ongoing threat posed by Turji’s operations. Sokoto state legislator Aminu Boza has reported that Turji’s group is demanding a 20 million naira levy from communities in the Isa and Sabon Birni areas of Sokoto state.

The military’s intensified efforts against Turji come amid growing concerns about banditry and terrorism in Nigeria’s northwestern region. Onumajuru assured that while operational details remain classified, the armed forces maintain constant surveillance of the bandit leader’s movements.
