According to Channels tv, Rivers State’s former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent labeling of Nigeria as a “Country of Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians and human rights violations. Speaking at a public function, Wike revealed that several individuals reached out urging him not to comment on the development, but he found the caution amusing.

“Before I came in here, many people texted me, ‘Oh, please don’t speak about Trump,’ and I just laughed,” Wike began, drawing laughter from the audience. He emphasized that leadership requires courage, clarity, and a willingness to speak truth, even when international relations are involved. “We cannot pretend all is well or be afraid to talk because someone somewhere may not like it,” he added.

Wike acknowledged that Nigeria’s global image has taken hits in recent years, particularly regarding insecurity, religious tensions, and governance concerns. However, he stressed that external pronouncements should not dictate Nigeria’s narrative, nor should they weaken national confidence. Instead, he urged Nigerians to maintain sovereign dignity and address internal issues with sincerity and unity.

He criticized what he described as attempts to politicize insecurity and foreign commentary, noting that real leadership focuses on solving problems rather than trading blame. “Our duty is not to shout back or panic because Trump or America said something,” Wike said. “Our duty is to make sure no Nigerian—Christian, Muslim, or of any faith—lives in fear. Let our actions speak louder than American statements.” View, More,
