In an interview with The Punch, the former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at the Defence Headquarters, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.), spoke on the recent reported coup plot, the growing insecurity in the country, and the arraignment of Nnamdi Kanu, among other national issues.
In response to a question on the Federal Government’s earlier claim that it had uncovered those financing insurgency but seemed to have taken no concrete action afterward, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.) expressed concern that the alleged sponsors might still be operating freely.
He said, “Yes, they’re still doing it, and getting emboldened. You mentioned somebody, look at the people like him parading themselves around. I did an interview on Arise Television and I challenged Tinubu, asking: what’s he afraid of ?
“So, somebody is not just a sponsor but also like a mentor.
“And you allow him to roam the streets because you’re afraid of him ? What’s he afraid of ? Until they come to Aso Rock, and flush him out of the place ?
“You should not be afraid of them; you should take the bull by the horns. The Interpol, the DSS, and others have all this information.”
Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (retd.) warned that political correctness must not be allowed to paralyse the country, arguing that tolerating such people would make the president’s tenure ungovernable.
He said those he referred to were already preparing for 2027 and were boasting that they would treat the incumbent the same way they had treated former President Goodluck Jonathan, even daring the president to ask Jonathan about it.
Olawunmi asserted that many of the suspects should have been arrested long ago, accusing them of amassing vast sums during President Buhari’s administration and effectively “milking the CBN dry,” which, he said, left them with large resources to manipulate political outcomes.
He urged President Tinubu to act decisively by summoning all intelligence chiefs, tasking them to identify both domestic and foreign sponsors of terrorism.
He said the foreign sponsors came from some Islamic countries while the domestic sponsors were local actors, and insisted that the Defence Intelligence Agency already knew who they were. Olawunmi maintained that once those sponsors were rounded up, tried for treason, and punished, terrorism in Nigeria would be significantly reduced, by about half, in his view. View, More,
