In a recent interview on Voice of the People TV from 44:35, Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi addressed the issue of banditry and armed groups in Nigeria. He revealed that discussions have been held with some of these groups, highlighting their potential willingness to cease violent activities under fair conditions.
According to him, “We have talked to them; they are ready to lay down arms if they get what other get.” He emphasized that these discussions are part of efforts to explore peaceful solutions to the ongoing insecurity affecting multiple states in the country.
Gumi explained that the bandits’ readiness to surrender their weapons depends on equitable treatment, access to social and economic opportunities, and assurances of fair governance. He stressed that addressing the underlying factors driving these individuals to violence, such as poverty, lack of education, and marginalization, is essential to ensure long-term stability.
The scholar further noted that understanding the motivations and grievances of these groups is key to designing effective interventions. By providing opportunities comparable to what ordinary citizens enjoy, he argued, the government could reduce incentives for criminal behavior and promote reintegration into society.
Gumi concluded by urging the authorities, community leaders, and civil society to adopt a balanced approach, combining security enforcement with social programs, dialogue, and reintegration efforts. He emphasized that fair treatment and guarantees could pave the way for lasting peace, protect communities from further attacks, and stabilize regions impacted by banditry and terrorism in Nigeria.
