Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has raised serious concerns about the growing sophistication of armed groups in Nigeria, questioning how bandits evolved from using basic weapons to acquiring advanced firearms and machinery.
In a video interview from 24:52 shared by SYMFONI TV, Tanko expressed alarm over the apparent awareness of security agencies regarding the locations of these armed groups.
He referenced Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s visits to bandit camps, noting that Gumi was often accompanied by operatives from the DSS, police, and other security agencies.
He questioned how such groups could remain elusive when state forces were present during these engagements.
Tanko emphasized that the banditry crisis began with crude weapons like bows and arrows but has now escalated into a full-blown security emergency involving high-powered arms.
He implied that such a transformation could not have occurred without either internal complicity or a major lapse in oversight.
His words,
“Look, those who are even involved in the issues of security will tell you. I quote Sheikh Gumi: ‘He said that everywhere he went to meet with the bandits, the DSS is with him, police is with him, every security apparatus are with him.’ So, if you’re with him, then you know the destination and location of the bandit. This thing started with bows and arrows. Then you want to ask yourself: how did they get guns and machineries?” View, More,
