Nigerian security experts have outlined the potential military capabilities the United States could deploy to assist Nigeria in combating terrorism and banditry, with emphasis on advanced air support systems that could dramatically alter the battlefield dynamics.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources program from 13:06, Major General. Anthony Atolagbe, a Former JTF Commander, Operations Safe Heaven, detailed the sophisticated military assets America possesses that could prove decisive in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency.
“We have what we call the B-52 bombers that is referred to as the Strat Fortress. That particular aircraft has the capacity to deliver payloads that can waste resources within a radius of close to 5 kilometers or more,” Major General Anthony Atolagbe explained during the discussion on how Americans might help Nigeria militarily.
The retired general further elaborated on another advanced weapons system, stating: “You are talking about a B2, the one that was deployed to Iran. Those six aircraft that were the stealth aircraft because they move in such a manner that you can hardly detect that they are on top of you at the point that they are delivering the payloads.”
According to Atolagbe, such stealth bombers operate with sophisticated technology that makes detection extremely difficult. “They have a lot of capacities not to be detected by radars, by surveillance devices. So you now see a situation where, when you look at the capabilities of some of these aircraft, apart from being stealth, it has the capacity to penetrate,” he noted.
Addressing concerns about the inaccessibility of terrorist hideouts, the retired general emphasized the penetrative power of these aircraft. “I know that some of these guys are on top of high grounds, rocky places and so on. This type of aircraft has the capacity to deliver some reasonable payloads on those positions and neutralize forces within even if they have dug into the ground,” he stated.
The discussion comes as the Nigerian government has announced a joint working group with the United States, with the presidency already releasing the names of Nigerian representatives while awaiting the American delegation’s composition.
Major General Atolagbe also outlined other critical support systems, explaining: “The Americans have what they call the special operations command which is composed of different elements of forces including the logistic forces also that will back up any deployment of troops.”
He emphasized the importance of air support and logistics in any potential American intervention, noting that such cooperation would need to be built on existing bilateral and multilateral arrangements.
The retired general’s assessment provides insight into the high-level military capabilities that could be brought to bear in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism, banditry, and insurgency, though he acknowledged the need to verify specific technical details about weapon ranges and capabilities.
