Dele Momodu, a PDP member and close associate of the late MKO Abiola, has shared details about a tense moment in 1995 after Abiola declared himself as president of Nigeria

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Honest Bunch Podcast by Glitch Africa Studios Momodu said Abiola went into hiding for 13 days after he declared himself as president. He said the last location where he stayed before returning home was in Surulere, and only a few trusted individuals knew his whereabouts.

Momodu said that he and several other people, including a Babalawo (native doctor) accompanied Abiola back home from his place of hiding. He said Abiola was assured that with the Babalawo around him, the police would not be able to arrest him, however, the Babalawo was the first to panick when they saw a heavy police presence around Abiola’s house.

In Momodu’s words: “Apparently the man on the other side was a Babalawo, like a juju man, someone supplied. The person said ‘don’t worry if that Babalawo is around the police will not be able to catch Abiola and the man will release honey bees into the sky’, but he was the first to panick”
