A former PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State Segun Showunmi has urged the Labour Party’s Peter Obi not to accept any offer for a vice-presidential slot in the 2027 elections, insisting that such a move would be a betrayal of the political gains the Igbo people have made.

In an interview with Arise Television, Showunmi emphasized that if Nigeria’s first president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, were alive, he would remind Obi of the dignity and hope he has restored to his people.

“He would have said, look, Peter, you have gotten back some political respect for us in Igbo land, under no circumstance. If they don’t get your message, if they cannot respect your drive, if they cannot respect your passion, then let them go and cast that vote and throw it in the Atlantic Ocean,” Showunmi passionately stated.

He warned that accepting the role of a running mate would diminish Obi’s political standing, describing such a choice as regressive. According to him, Obi should never allow himself to be treated like a subordinate waiting to be picked for a lesser position.

Showunmi added that Peter is not a schoolboy and shouldn’t let anyone patronize him into stepping down for convenience. He emphasized that Obi has earned the right to contest at the top level, reinforcing his call for Obi to stay true to his ambition and vision.

Showunmi further noted that Obi’s impact in the last election reignited belief among millions, especially within the southeastern region. Surrendering now, he warned, would send the wrong message to his supporters and the broader political landscape.
