In an interview with Trust TV, Alhaji Yahaya Kwande, former Nigerian Ambassador to Switzerland, offered a candid perspective on why former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has repeatedly failed in his bids for the presidency. According to Kwande, Atiku’s challenge does not stem from a lack of popular support among the masses, but rather from opposition within Nigeria’s northern elite. He suggested that members of the upper class in the North harbor resentment and envy toward Atiku’s achievements, which has contributed to his political setbacks.
Kwande went on to describe Atiku as a man disliked by many of his contemporaries, implying that professional rivalries and personal animosities have played a role in his political struggles. He further expressed his belief that Atiku had once won a presidential election, only for the victory to be unjustly taken from him.
According to him, “He has won an election that was taken away from him, I believe so. Atiku’s problem is not the masses; it’s not the voters of Nigeria. He is a child that his colleagues hate—those in the upper class of Nigeria, particularly Northerners. Northerners are so jealous of that man’s success that they usually block him at the eve of success.”
