Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly preparing to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to contest the 2027 presidential election, as reported by Punch on Thursday, 17 July, 2025.
A close source within Atiku’s camp, who asked not to be named, confirmed that the former PDP leader is planning to register with the ADC.
According to the source, Atiku is expected to make a formal announcement soon.
The source explained that Atiku’s move is part of a larger plan to lead a strong opposition against President Bola Tinubu.
“Of course, he’s heading to the ADC. He will formally register and declare his presidential ambition in the coming days,” he said.
Atiku recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a loss of direction and a shift away from the party’s founding values.
His decision has brought intense debate within Nigeria’s political circles.
The ADC has emerged as a new coalition platform for several opposition leaders.
Figures like Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and David Mark have already aligned with the party.
Atiku’s move to the ADC is seen as a bold step to unite opposition voices ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ADC leadership has welcomed his involvement and expressed confidence in building a stronger political force with his support.
