Political analyst and public affairs commentator Jide Ojo has expressed concern over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s continued ambition to run for Nigeria’s presidency, citing his age and persistent political aspirations.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Ojo described Atiku’s presidential pursuit as “inordinate,” noting that the Peoples Democratic Party stalwart is already 78 years old.
“Whatever it is, I don’t know whether it’s a very good strategy because we all know that someone like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has an inordinate ambition to be president of Nigeria. He’s already 78 years and he’s still looking forward to being the standard bearer in 2027,” Ojo stated.
Atiku, who has contested for the presidency multiple times, most recently lost to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 general elections. Despite this, he has remained a prominent figure within the PDP, with speculation mounting that he may once again seek the party’s ticket in 2027.
Ojo’s remarks have reignited the debate over leadership succession and generational change in Nigerian politics. Critics argue that the country needs younger, more dynamic leaders to address its evolving challenges, while others maintain that experience and political maturity, which Atiku possesses, are crucial in navigating Nigeria’s complex landscape.
The PDP has yet to officially announce its strategy or potential candidates for the 2027 elections, but Atiku’s reported interest suggests that internal party dynamics could soon become more heated.
As Nigeria looks toward another election cycle, questions remain about the future direction of the opposition and whether figures like Atiku will continue to dominate its political narrative.
